Questioning the Everyday: The Street - a participatory workshop by Rebecca Gamble

Wednesday 12th September 2012 - 14:00 - 17:00
This participatory workshop will choreograph and record a series of live actions in the everyday.

Using Georges Perec’s instructions for how to observe the infra-ordinary place of ‘The Street’, participants will be given instructions and methods for how to observe and record. These will act as ‘event scores’ for individual and collective live actions, which frame everyday actions as minimalistic performances, (Higgins 2002).

Following a contextual introduction in the Market Square, the participants will go out to record their observations of the street, using the instructions, suggestions and methods provided, by Perec and researcher and artist Rebecca Gamble, through live notation, mobile phone video and images. These will be collected and uploaded to a website and then created into a short film narrative to share with the participants and WEYA .

How should we take account of, question, describe what happens every day and recurs every day: the banal, the quotidian, the obvious, the common, the ordinary, the infra-ordinary, the background noise, the habitual?” Georges Perec, The Species of Spaces and other pieces. (p.210)
