Duty Free: Tourism in Performance

Tourism: the word is often associated with people perceived to be dabbling in something, not being committed. What does it mean, as a performance maker, to 'borrow' material, to touch the surface of a concept, to not quite belong in one genre or another?

What are the obligations that having a geographical identity bring to performance practice? How can the theatre, as a specific site, be unpacked? How do our environments, and the points of reference we take from our environments, influence the work that we make?

Following a presentation by GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN there will be the chance for informal audience discussion on these themes arising from the notion of ‘tourism’.

GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN is a performance company making cross-genre work that plays with glory, endurance, artifice and the banal. They also curate the work of other artists. GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN’s work has been shown across London at venues including National Theatre Studio (SPILL 2011), Soho Theatre, The Roundhouse and Battersea Arts Centre, as well as on national tours. The company were Platformed Artists at Arnolfini (Bristol) during 2011, where they were commissioned to respond to the venue’s 50th Anniversary theme “The Apparatus of Culture”. Internationally, the company’s work has been shown at Festival Belluard Bollwerk International (Switzerland), ANTI Festival of Contemporary Art (Finland), PACT (Germany), Noorderzon Festival (Netherlands), Junge Hunde Festival (Denmark) and Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts.
