Alex Patterson 11.00
Alex Patterson is a Northern Irish born composer and conductor based in Nottingham. Growing up on a farm in the County Down countryside, he regards his rural upbringing as a massive inspiration for his music. Early in his career he became a local organist for his parish church choir, and even sang with the acclaimed Ulster Youth Choir. He has since been composer-in-residence at St Barnabas Cathedral; musical director for the Radcliffe Ladies Choir; commissioned as conductor and composer for the East of England Singers, Radcliffe Male Voice Choir, and Ripley Music Festival; recorded a CD of his own choral music as St Barnabus featuring the Schola Cantorum after receiving scholarship to the establishment; has worked for Arts Council England and UK Young Artists; and completed studies at the University of Nottingham where he also played a pivotal role in multi-award winning OpSoc and other aspects of the music department. Conducting various ensembles throughout his study, he was musical director for a number of projects and toured Rome, Tuscany and Hong Kong with Schola Cantorum. The Imperial College Chamber Choir commissioned Patterson to compose an adaptation of Shakespeare text to be performed at the Holy Trinity Church in London, with the artist opting for part of a speech at the end of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Recently completing Limbo, a short octet for the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the young composer continues to rise as a credible British artist excelling in his field.

Putting on hold other projects, group and solo, they anchored their connection through a shared love of intercultural music; taking inspiration from their combined African, French and Asian roots to pursue union through diversity.

Their music has been played on BBC Radio 3, and magazine The Wire has dubbed their debut record ‘Mallet Guitars One’ as ‘a three chord punk mission statement turned into a neo-classical manifesto’.
