Chen’s work is partly functional and partly conceptual. There is also interplay between traditional and contemporary aesthetics and decorative motifs. The medium of ceramics is satisfyingly tactile; Chen enjoys the fact that malleable clay can, through the process of firing, be transformed into dense, hard artworks. Her preferred materials are stoneware and porcelain.
The hand-built ceramic forms that the artist is creating now owe their origins to ancient traditions, or images from inside her mind, therefore they are based on motifs associated with her life.
Wen-Hsi Chen is an MA graduate in Contemporary Crafts (Ceramics) from the University for Creative Arts. Her most recent exhibition has been at ‘Roath Crafts Market’ Cardiff.
